What nonsense! Of course one might well prefer 10 hours and 15 minutes worth on the 2008 Audible "Unabridged" recording to an abridgment, then again, why not both? At the moment, the "Audible sample" at Amazon allows an interesting comparison of the opening chapter, and an idea of the scope - and impressive skill - of the abridgment of at least this part. Bu that Alison Larkin reads better than the late Bernard Cribbins? De gustibus... But while I can imagine listening to more of her, I am left wishing he had also made an unabridged version as well as this delightful one!

I had the cassette tape of this as a boy in south Africa in the 1980s and spent many happy hours listening to the adventures of David Balfour and Alan Breck until eventually the tape got chewed up and destroyed in the machine.

In the 1950s, 5 o'clock every weekday after school 'Children's Hour' on the Home Service was a must on the wireless. David Davis dulcet tones have remained with me all these years, never was there a better story teller.

Brilliant! Thank you so much for posting this. This is my absolute favourite, and personally I really like Leslie Crowther's reading. 'Paddington Saves the Day' is the best story on this and I love the rendering of 'Smasher Knowles' and 'Alf Duckham'. It's been great to listen to all of these again (and so many new ones) so thanks once again.

Oh HAZAH! my copy of this was ruined by some kid my mum had over during one of her christian do's. Little brat pulled the tape out and twisted it. Aaaaaah... listening to that music again... glorious! TBH, the fact the tape survived that long given how much it got played is a minor miricle. (wish I could press the fave button 100 times)

I couldn't get interested in this book in grammar school, ignored it for decades, and still don't enjoy it at 81. Maybe it's a "boy's" book. Wish it had an actual active "girl" in it were a meager kitty 🐈 or an armadillo. And enough already re voiding gushes of water. 😅

I will never understand the censorship of stories like the bonfire one. Undoubtedly, firework safety in earlier decades was poorer than it is today, but why stop children reading stories about those times? It's one of my favourite Paddington stories - so well constructed in the way Mr Curry receives his comeuppance, and how the family celebrate a good old-fashioned November 5th.
